RLS provided our children a unique opportunity to study the Russian language and culture in the US. Both of our kids have been attending the school for over a year now, starting with individual classes and then transitioning to weekend group lessons covering reading/writing, math, arts, music, and theater. The progress has been fantastic, with our kids demonstrating rapid improvements in verbal and written skills and becoming more comfortable switching between English and Russian during daily conversations. Discipline and focus have also improved substantially because group classes have relatively few children, and teachers can directly help students stay engaged with the material. Handwriting, math, and theatre skills are also transferable to the activities done at the regular English school that they attend during the week, which is a nice bonus. By observing many of the lessons, it is clear that the teachers strive to provide an individual approach, as students within a group often have a different level of understanding of the subject and often struggle with language barriers. What we also found very helpful is that teachers remind parents of the importance of at-home activities for improving fluency in Russian. Big thanks to all the teachers for their hard work with the kids. The RLS director, Irina, also deserves special thanks for organizing the school and for the many quick and kind responses to specialized requests regarding scheduling, finding tutors for specialized subjects like music, and ensuring that individual students make progress in a group environment. We certainly recommend RLS to anyone looking to improve their children’s Russian language skills and to experience learning in a cultural environment that closely resembles typical elementary schools in Russia, with the added benefit of much smaller classrooms that aid faster progress.
